Periodontology specialist

Dr Fiona MacKillop

Fiona has been a specialist in periodontology for over 20 years and her enthusiasm for subject is as strong as ever. She has been working at the Dawood and Tanner Specialist Dental Practice for nearly as long, starting shortly on her return from New York. She loves working in this multi-disciplinary specialist setting, simply because she feels it offers the best level of care to the patient.

She qualified from Glasgow University in 1993 and following a short spell in general practice, working in all aspects of restorative dentistry,  realised that her  particular interest lay in the field of periodontology (gum health and treatment). She began her  career in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at Guy’s Hospital , achieving  a  Masters Degree in Periodontics in 1997. She was then asked to join the prestigious Floyd and Zamet Periodontal practice.

Moving to Manhattan, New York, she was offered the post of Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgical Sciences (Periodontics) at New York University.  It was while working here that she became fascinated in bone and soft tissue regeneration and augmentation techniques.  She was  accepted to  join  the American Academy of Periodontology.

On returning to London, with Scottish accent intact, she continued to teach at Guy’s Hospital for several years as an Honorary Clinical Demonstrator in the Department of Periodontology. Her implant training was completed in 2006  from UCL  Eastman Dental Institute.  Her practice is now focused very much upon periodontics and implant dentistry.  it is obvious when she speaks that she relishes the challenging multidisciplinary treatments and complex cases, although she  admits there is nothing better than seeing gum health improve just by giving someone the right skills and encouragement  to clean.

She enjoys  the  team approach  working with referring dentist and the therapists and hygienists.  Complex treatment will  often involve  other disciplines and specialists at the practice.

She continues to lecture and teach in the UK and abroad and is involved in the BWSID: British Women’s Society of Implant Dentistry.  This was an association set out  to inspire, empower and support women in the fields of restorative implant dentistry.
